The Problem with Local

As someone who has made a career of tracking trends, I have not let this whole notion of local gone loco escape my sights. I’ve talked for a while about global going local, due in large part not only to our newfound connectivity on all things social media, but also to our renewed interest in our actual communities and how to be part of everything local. From rooftop gardens in Bed-Stuy to the Board of Education in Darien, there’s no shortage of ways to get involved in all things neighborhood. So why does all this “joining” make me feel like I want to do a Howard Hughes, or at least a Greta Garbo, and tuck in—way, way in?

Frugality Holding Strong

Euro RSCG’s New Consumer study found signs of a populace grown weary of throwaway culture and the constant quest for more. Looking at the U.S. stats:

  • 87% felt good about themselves when saving money
  • 49% were getting a sense of satisfaction from reducing their purchases during the downturn
  • 52% claimed they wouldn’t go back to their old shopping patterns even when the economy rebounded
  • 48% were making an effort to buy fewer disposable goods

Yes, We Can…Reinvent Ourselves
