Across the globe, environmentally friendly fashion is becoming ever more fashionable

Eco fashion got a high-powered boost with the announcement that Harry Potter star Emma Watson is teaming with Alberta Ferretti on an eco-friendly line. Perhaps the popular British actress will help turn her countrymen’s perceptions of green style around (recent research indicates that European consumers view eco-fashion negatively, while North American buyers perceive it as young and trendy). Serendipitously, the Museum at FIT in Manhattan recently housed an exhibit called “Eco-Fashion: Going Green,” while the New York duo Costello Tagliapietra landed a first-place spot in the latest Eco Challenge. Efforts also are being made to bring sustainable fashion practices to India and Singapore, even for luxury goods.

Whoever said it’s not easy being green?

In the Fort Greene section of Brooklyn, New York, a space that was once a parking lot has been transformed into one of the borough’s best scenes. Habana Outpost, a restaurant-cum-cultural center, features an open-air market, outdoor movies, great food and drink, and a social hub for the creative and diverse local community. Underlying it all is an ethic of sustainability: The eatery, powered by renewable energy, boasts dozens of green building features—none of which takes away from the enjoyable experience. Can the Evolution of Empathy Save Us?

Increased concern over the environment and climate change is apparent around the globe. And people and communities are beginning to make real changes, whether it be a parent sending the kids to school with reusable water bottles or a city banning plastic bags at retail. Looking at the findings from Euro RSCG’s New Consumer study, we see that more than six in ten respondents in the seven markets surveyed feel good about making environmentally friendly choices. More than half are making an effort to buy fewer disposable goods, and 72 percent are feeling good about reducing the amount of waste they create. All hopeful changes, but can centuries of eco-mindlessness be undone?

The era of mindless consumption is over. Consumers now want a simple, sustainable, and self-sufficient life.

Conspicuous consumption. Shop till you drop. All-you-can-eat buffets and supersized meals. The post–World War II era has been marked by a voracious hunger for more. In affluent countries, people bought too much, ate too much, used up too much, and owed too much. Yet, for many, it still wasn’t enough. There was something missing—lots of things, really. Among them, a sense of control and self-sufficiency, personal responsibility, and feelings of community and authenticity. Replacing the constant accumulation of “stuff” with these more substantive intangibles lies at the heart of the current shift toward mindfulness—a movement in which heedless excess is exchanged for a more conscious and considered approach to living.
